The New Xbox One Experience & Windows 10 Xbox App Rolls Out

Today is the day (12th Nov) when Xbox One users will start to get their hands on the latest update; which basically adds a range of features to the console including Xbox 360 Compatibility, Xbox Button Mapping, Windows 10 and DX12 support.

Additionally you get an overhauled UI which offers a quicker means to access the games and entertainment running on the platform.

Of course the update is going to roll out in a staggered format, because if its anything like the update I had the other day you could be looking at a 3.3GB install! Hopefully it will be smaller, something like 1.3GB or so, but this is still a big-un!

I'm looking forward to seeing what the developers can now do with the system; which is essentially a new Xbox One. DX12 should hopefully bring a boost in performance (albeit small, but every little helps), plus the cross-platform play, between Windows 10 PC's and Xbox One owners, will now be a reality. Additionally you will also have universal App support (so a lot more Windows 10 Apps can be ported across).

Xbox 360 Compatibility

I used the Xbox 360 compatibility function last night to play Gears of War (Split-screen coop) and this was running pretty darn good! Considering it was running under emulation, it's even more impressive! 104 titles are on offer to start with and while this may not seem a lot, the list should continue to grow moving forwards.

For me, I was just thinking, now that the option is out there in the wild, more devs can potentially start to offer new games with an older version of the title thrown in i.e. something similar to Fallout 4 which had a copy of Fallout 3 included free of charge. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Also the Button mapping software could be another useful option. My earlier look at this is pretty much the same as what you get now; only the cosmetic changes have kicked in. You can see this in action below, including what to expect with the NXOE update.

Another update that has hit the community today is for Windows 10 users running the Xbox App. The latest update provides a proper integrated store so that you can buy games for both your Xbox One and Windows 10 devices; all from within the one application! What's cool here is that you can also see which of your friends play the game before you buy it.

The latest update is version 11.11.11004.00000, but if you don't have this yet, head to the Windows Store and click on your 'Account' icon at the top and then choose 'Downloads and updates' to check to see if the update is available.

On the whole it's a pretty packed day for the Xbox and Windows 10 community!
